The new minister for government efficiency, Mr Jacob Rees-Mogg suggested this week that the weighting for social value within public sector contracts should be reduced.
He wants government outsourcing to focus more on value for money and to see more contracts being awarded to smaller providers.
He expresses fears that smaller providers are disadvantaged by the social value element, however other opinions differ, thinking that smaller businesses often do it better than large organisations.
Social value is good for businesses too. Evidence over the last decade has shown that as social value becomes embedded in organisations, the workforce and community thrives, and then so does the business.
With the government Levelling Up policy paper only published in February 2022 and the cost of living increasing, many feel that this is the time to increase and encourage Social Value, not reduce it.
