Springboard Webinar with the Department of Business and Trade (DBT)

By April 24, 2024No Comments

This week, the BIVDA Springboard Programme were really pleased to welcome members of the Department of Business and Trade (DBT) who delivered a fantastic webinar called “The role of DBT and the Life Science Sector Team”.

Mark Oakes, Head of Life Sciences at DBT, gave a presentation followed by an interactive Q&A session for attendees, where he talked us through the role of DBT, an overview of the Life Sciences team and the focus of the work of the department.  Mark was joined and supported by Olivia Tierney, who is Medtech Senior Sector Manager in the Life Sciences team.

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) was created back in February 2023 through the merger of the Department for International Trade and the domestic business support elements of the Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). The merger brought business and trade together into a single department and the sector teams now have a wider remit. The responsibilities of the department include ensuring that markets are competitive and businesses thrive, while keeping consumers protected and also to secure investment from the UK and International businesses.

One of the responsibilities we discussed in detail was the advice and support that DBT provides to promote British businesses to grow and export particularly by helping to strike trade deals. This can begin with organised trade missions, and we heard how the missions can help to build connections and develop networks. One of our Springboard member companies has previously participated in a Trade mission to Saudi, and by sharing their experiences this helped give context and clarity for others.

Olivia introduced the “UK Essentials –  Export Academy programme” which is available online where you can join live sessions to help learn the basics of how to sell your products and services in other countries, your routes to market, export controls and how your business can benefit. You can also watch on-demand!

For the Springboard member companies it was a useful webinar, to learn and understand how export can help grow and develop your business and the different ways in which DBT can support. The webinar will be added to the BIVDA website shortly, so that all members can access the content.

The BIVDA Springboard Programme is designed to help and support our innovative new member companies grow and develop by collaborating and connecting with industry experts. We will offer tips on innovation funding, networking opportunities, and tailored services and support to help guide our member companies to overcome some of the potential barriers and key challenges they may be facing on their path to achieving commercial success.
