Neurodiversity Celebration Week: Eamon Doherty to speak about Neurodiversity at BIVDA’s EDI Summit

This week is Neurodiversity Celebration Week. This is an ideal opportunity to learn more about, and celebrate, neurodiversity. We are also pleased to announce that Eamon Doherty, Regulatory Affairs Manager at Biocartis, will be speaking about the subject at BIVDA’s EDI Summit on 30 April.

Neurodiversity as a category of diversity and inclusion in the workplace has become quite prominent due growing amount of data surrounding autism, dyslexia and ADHD that has increased global awareness of neurodiversity.

What is neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity is the natural variation in human brain functioning. The term neurodiversity, refers to the infinite range of differences in individual human brain function and behavioural traits.

The term is also being used to represent an area of organisational equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) that seeks to embrace and value all types of information processing, learning and communication styles.

The reality of neurodiversity, then, means that every interaction at work takes place between people with different brains – yet, typically, very few organisations are thinking about neurodiversity or neuroinclusion.

Why neurodiversity matters?

Neurodiversity initiatives that create a amore neurodiversity aware culture can help neurodiverse individuals feel comfortable disclose their diagnosis and to request suitable adjustments to help them succeed at work.

Organisations such as Microsoft have developed prominent neurodiversity programmes as they have recognised the that by building a neurodiverse teams that they can provide a competitive advantage in addition to being a responsible employer.

How can I support neurodiversity?  

If you want to support neurodivergent individuals in your organisation, please below for some tips on how you can foster neurodiversity:

  • Recognise that neurodivergence does not define someone, but it can be an important part of their identity.
  • Recognise that no two neurodivergent people are the same; they will have different goals and needs.
  • Advocate and provide allyship for neurodiverse individuals.
  • Promote practices that accept and accommodate neurodivergence.
  • Speak up if you hear or see someone being prejudiced against someone who is neurodivergent.

Be an ally for neurodivergent people by telling them they can come to you if they need to talk or need help.
