MRC funding applications open for research on Environmental Sustainability in life sciences and medical practice

By January 14, 2022No Comments

The Medical Research Council (MRC) have announced a new funding opportunity for environmental sustainability research in life science and medical practice.

Research into the ecological and environmental impacts of medical and life science activities is an extremely important issue. Sectors across our economy are obliged to examine waste output and energy use that are detrimental to the planet, and feed into the disastrous effects of climate change.

The focus is on environmental sustainability, including achieving net zero carbon emissions alongside promoting a net positive environmental impact.

MRC wants to fund practical research to achieve some or all of the following:

  • look at aspects of research and medical practice that are not environmentally sustainable and seek to improve our understanding or provide practical solutions
  • consider the ongoing impacts associated with the creation of new innovations in medical research
  • engage stakeholders and promote knowledge exchange
  • develop pump-prime initiatives or feasibility studies into promoting sustainable research or medical practice.

The MRC are prepared to fund 80% of the full economic cost up to £100,000. Studies focusing on facilities management and travel arrangements are ineligible for funding. The total fund available is £1 million, MRC anticipate funding up to 10 projects over a funding period of up to 12 months.

There is a two-stage process for applications; an outline application and then a full application (if successful in the outline stage). Outline applications will be considered by a scientific review panel, convened by MRC. Recommendations to invite to the full application stage will be made by the panel. All applications will be sent out for independent expert peer review before consideration by the panel for a funding decision.

Full information on the MRC funding is available at this page. The outline stage of this funding opportunity is now open and the deadline for applications is Tuesday 1 March 2022 at 16:00.

Opening of the full applications stage is anticipated in March 2022.
