Helen meets with Wes Streeting

This week, Lord Darzi invited Helen to a life science dinner roundtable, also attended by Shadow Health Secretary Wes Streeting, as a sector expert to discuss challenges in the life sciences industry, including the economy, costs, waiting lists, data, and partnerships with industry. Feedback was also provided on Labour’s plan for the life sciences sector.

Helen said, “The IVD sector is cautiously optimistic and pleased to see the focus on early diagnosis and prevention. Managed well, healthcare outside of acute settings can contribute to reducing inequality in health and improve the health and wealth of the UK.”

On the same day, Helen met with a group of MPs interested in boosting prospects for SMEs, which included Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and Deputy Leader of the Labour Party Angela Rayner. Various other industry representatives, not exclusively in health, also attended.

Closer regulatory and economic ties to the EU and working more intimately with the devolved nations were principal topics of discussion. Enthusiasm for expanding community care as a means of cutting waiting lists was expressed by those in the room.

A more extensive update will be provided at the next External Affairs Working Party.
