BIVDA Springboard Event – “Finance, Funding and Investing”

By June 18, 2024No Comments

Members of our BIVDA Springboard Programme assembled last week for the “Finance, Funding and Investing” Masterclass delivered in collaboration with Barclays Eagle Labs. We met in the Eagle Labs co-working space in Chiswick, which provided a lovely shared space for our day together.

Jen Estherby and the Barclays Eagle Labs team shared details on the Demo Directory which is a specific platform that allows founders to connect with investors, and potentially find the investment they are looking for to take their business ideas forward. Life Sciences is an important focus for Barclays Eagle Labs, and the Demo Directory provides a great opportunity for BIVDA members who may be seeking Investment.

The Springboard group then heard from Dr Phil Packer from Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency who support business-led innovation in all sectors, technologies and UK regions. Innovate UK are a key delivery body of the Government’s Innovation Strategy and aim to help UK businesses grow through the development and commercialisation of new products, processes, and services, supported by an outstanding innovation ecosystem that’s agile, inclusive and easy to navigate.

Dr Ian Newington was next up on the agenda. He is Assistant Director for Innovations at LGC Grant Management Group and is actively involved in the NIHR i4i Programme, SBRI Healthcare and the NHS Cancer Open Calls, managing a portfolio of funded projects and a focus on supporting SMEs, signposting them to appropriate support. Ian shared invaluable details on each of the programmes and how to find out more about each funding call as and when they become available.

We then heard from Claire Hope from CPI UK, who spoke about what makes a compelling grant application and the process of applying. This was a great session and really provided actionable insights into how companies can focus their applications and include the right information to improve your chances of success.

During the closing part of our day together, we talked about “How to Pitch”. Whether this is as an individual for networking or as a business talking to potential investors, it is important to know the elements of a good pitch and how to deliver it. It was important to spend time talking, encouraging each other and learning from everyone’s experiences across our industry.

The Springboard materials will be available on the BIVDA website members section shortly – please contact Lucy.Lehane@BIVDA.org.uk with any questions.
