A Day in the Life: Work Experience at BIVDA

By February 14, 2024No Comments

My name is Eleanor Wilkins, I am in Sixth Form at Cromwell Community College in Chatteris and I am taking three A Levels; Business Studies, Geography and English Literature. I chose BIVDA for my Year 12 work experience and I’ve learnt a lot, and it’s shown me how diverse a workplace can be.

I had a new starter induction which went through health and safety, first aid and fire precautions which made me feel safer and more confident about being in the office. Natalie invited me to a HR Working Party Planning meeting, which was focused on EDI (equality, diversity and inclusion) and how to get everyone involved and understanding EDI at the meeting.

I also helped with issuing 2024 member renewal certificates with Dawn, who was very patient and helpful. I attended the team meeting with the secretariat, where I was introduced to the rest of the team where they discussed activities and plans for the week. I attended the Evergreen Sustainability Webinar which Sarah Newton presented, where I learnt about sustainability in the NHS and future goals to implement carbon reduction plans and rules on modern slavery. This was an amazing experience because I was unaware of the great efforts that businesses put into helping others and making their company environmentally friendly and socially responsible. I also helped segment the CRM in member profiles, for regional identification which will help BIVDA identify member location for industrial strategy.

Later this week I will also work with Paul and Ben on policy work for adoption of IVDs and AMR and visit a member. Tehelj is going to teach me about regulation and the work she’s doing to support members. I will attend a few meetings with the Department of Health, NHS England and BIVDA’s communications agency with Helen to get an insight on designing sustainability into healthcare processes, priorities of the deputy chief scientific officer and strategic messaging with a communications agency. Overall I’ve had lots of fun and learnt a lot, I definitely recommend BIVDA as a work experience option as the team are welcoming and friendly and the work is incredibly interesting. Huge thanks to the BIVDA team!

We would be happy to host more students for work experience. If you are a member company and would like to take this opportunity, please email natalie.creaney@bivda.org.uk.
