NHS patients favour shift of focus to primary care, prevention and earlier diagnosis – report

A Health Foundation report examining the public’s view of the future of the NHS has found support for a shift towards a focus on primary care, prevention and earlier diagnosis.

Participants acknowledged the NHS’s tight finances, stating they would prefer primary and community care prioritised as a means of preventing ill health and therefore keeping patients out of hospital. They also recognised the value of early diagnoses to help manage conditions more easily and avoid serious complications.

However, participants also questioned the value of faster diagnoses if long waiting lists were not addressed. This demonstrates that patients see the value of testing, however, more funding to cut waiting times and a better, more joined-up approach to pathways is needed to fully exploit the benefits of quicker diagnoses.
