New £1.8m urology centre to offer same day tests

The new £1.8m centre at Kettering General Hospital will provide same-day tests to patients, improving convenience and resulting in quicker diagnoses for cancer and other conditions.

The opening of the centre was in response to urology referrals rising by over a quarter in five years. Specialist staff will also arrive in the spring, which should further help to speed up diagnoses and improve workflow.

Consultant David Payne declared that the new centre would result in “less stress and anxiety” for patients.

He continued, saying: “Having a one-stop shop service will allow us to see, test, diagnose, and give an individual treatment plan, all in the same hospital visit”.

“We are phasing in the service over a number of months and when the service is fully up-to-speed it will mean the number of times patients have to visit the hospital for tests will reduce from as many as five or more down to one or two.”

This demonstrates the importance of health infrastructure reflecting local health needs, a target already identified as central to the new ICSs. Making diagnoses faster and more convenient for patients is crucial in achieving earlier diagnoses which save lives, reduce patient treatment times and lessen suffering.
