200 bowel cancer survivors in Swansea are to be offered revolutionary blood tests to check whether their disease has returned. Those chosen will also be on a waiting list for colonoscopies, ensuring a diagnosis is not delayed if indeed a patient’s cancer has reappeared and offering peace of mind for those who are cleared.
The rollout has been funded by the Moondance Cancer Initiative and has been widely welcomed by leading cancer charities.
It is hoped that the blood tests will provide a simple, cheap alternative to for those waiting for colonoscopies and offers the chance to reduce overall waiting times and cut the backlog for those requiring bowel cancer monitoring. A further advantage is that blood tests are far less invasive than colonoscopies.
The patients will be contacted over the next few months and, if successful, could be rolled out in other parts of Wales in future.
