19 more diagnostic hubs to be opened to tackle the COVID backlog

The Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, has pledged to tackle the multitude of problems affecting the NHS, including by opening more diagnostic hubs. He has claimed that people “want action” and will address this, in part, by opening 19 new diagnostic hubs.

Tackling the backlog and reducing winter pressures are currently seen as the most pressing problems. More than seven million people in England are currently waiting for treatment.

91 diagnostic hubs have already opened with 19 more to open shortly to help deliver more tests. Ministers claim that more than 2.4 million tests, checks and scans have been undertaken by diagnostic hubs since last summer.

According to Government figures, in September the hubs delivered 11% of all diagnostic activity – and its ambition is for 40% to be achieved by 2025.
