EU report emphasizes need for high value cancer care for all

Ahead of World Cancer Day, a new report has been published to provide fresh insights on disparities, challenges and good practices when it comes to cancer care. The EU-funded “Delivering High Value Cancer Care” report was produced by the OECD for the European Cancer Inequalities Registry, as part of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan.

On Friday 6 February, a webinar will be held to discuss the key issues raised in the report. The webinar is open to all interested parties, particularly people living with cancer, health professionals and Member State experts.

Key findings in the report include

·    Delays in access to cancer diagnosis and treatment continue to cost lives.

·    Variations in medical practice and care quality lead to reduced survival or quality of life.

·    Less person-centred care has an impact on the physical health, well-being and social functioning of patients.

The report also identifies key ways in which EU countries, Norway and Iceland are already working to improve the quality of cancer care, which can serve as best practice for others.

Many of the issues raised in the report are also being addressed by the projects and flagship initiatives of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, which marks its 5th anniversary this year.
