Commission publishes report on action to enhance access to healthcare

The Commission has published a report showcasing EU4Health funded action to enhance access to healthcare across the EU.

The report finds that healthcare coverage has a poverty-reducing impact, comparable to that of cash transfers such as unemployment benefits. Since 2019, however, there has been a rise in the share of EU citizens with unmet medical needs, with those in lower-income brackets disproportionately affected. These trends underscore the urgency of addressing healthcare accessibility gaps.

The report released today offers a toolkit to evaluate the impact of various healthcare reform scenarios on population income inequality. This is crucial at a time when health system funding is under pressure.

Today’s initiative provides Member States with concrete tools to:

·     Assess the distributional impact of healthcare reforms

·     Design more equitable healthcare policies

·     Support evidence-based decision making in healthcare planning

Now it is up to Member States to fully leverage this work and advance equitable access to healthcare for all citizens.

As the Draghi report emphasised, today’s challenging global environment demands that growth and social inclusion advance in tandem. Today’s report is aligned with important upcoming EU policy developments, including the renewal of the European Pillar of Social Rights Action Plan and the planned European Anti-Poverty Strategy. The report’s findings and tools directly support these initiatives, by strengthening the evidence base for the role of healthcare in advancing social cohesion.
