MedTech Europe have responded to the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism consultation.

The current position is that this would impact not only importers of in scope materials, but also some products made of these energy intensive materials which includes Aluminium, Iron, Steel, Glass and Ceramics,  if they are not produced as Net Zero products.

At this current time, the EU has not applied to include the EU CBAM in the Windsor Framework, so this EU legislation does not apply to Northern Ireland. This was of concern as it would have meant that it would have applied to goods sent from GB to NI. However the UK intends to implement it’s own CBAM legislation linked to the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).

It will focus on Aluminium, Iron and Steel (as well as cement, Hydrogen and fertilisers). The UK scheme is planned to apply a year after (2027) the introduction of the EU scheme (2026).
