African Swine Fever – update on imports from Spain, 28 November 2025
Dear Trader,
On 28 November 2025, Spain notified Defra that cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) have been detected in wild boar within the Barcelona region. Spanish authorities have instructed their official veterinarians that, at national level, no further export certificates can be signed for affected products destined for Great Britain.
This means that the Official Veterinarians in Spain will not sign any export certificates of affected consignments until the ASF free area is recognised by the Spanish Government and European Commission.
We are awaiting further details on the regionalisation measures being applied by the Spanish Government and expect that Spain will shortly be regionalised for the import of pork into Great Britain. Port Health Authorities (PHAs) will be notified as soon as this is confirmed.
Until regionalisation is formally in place and the EU recognise the ASF free area, all certificates requiring ASF freedom cannot be accepted for entry into Great Britain.
As we expect regionalisation to be confirmed soon, we recommend, where feasible, that any affected consignments arriving at ports are detained pending the announcement of regionalisation.
