We had a very engaging discussion with workstream representatives at the BIVDA Sustainability Steering Group on 25th September with some good updates and discussion with system stakeholders.
Of particular note was a reassuring update from Alexandra Hammond – Associate Director, Net Zero and Sustainable Procurement at NHS England – in response to the risks BIVDA have raised with regard the NHS net zero supplier roadmap Scope 3 emissions targets for 2027 and 2028.
Alexandra has advised that these policies are not final and NHS England are planning a period of industry engagement to gain a full understanding of the risks and ensure that the policies that are developed are meaningful and proportionate.
NHSE have understood at a high level the risks and concerns and now want to get on a journey which is clear and removes ambiguity. This is the highest priority for her team and the ambition is to reach a policy position which does not compromise the net zero commitment but sets out a journey to it which is achievable.
There will be a full industry survey launched and further opportunity to provide feedback in the coming weeks and BIVDA will continue to develop its policy position as informed by members to support individual input. Alexandra Hammond will be presenting further update at the BIVDA Winter Sustainability Seminar on 22nd October.
