Smyth highlights the potential for AI in the NHS

In her first speech as Minister of State for Health, Karin Smyth highlighted the potential for AI to improve the NHS in a variety of ways.

Whilst she explained the benefits of AI in improving both diagnostics and administration, she placed specific emphasis on the ability of the technology to solve structural problems in the system, such as health inequalities.

As an example, Smyth cited research which showed that black women are nearly 4 times as likely to die during or within a year of pregnancy compared to white women.

To deal with such structural problems, she explained that “AI can start to spot patterns that the human eye is blind to”.
