The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) has produced a new report calling on the Government to prioritise AMR as a standalone focus in the forthcoming National Security Strategy, highlighting the link between conflict and the rapid rise of drug-resistant infections and pointing to the situation in Ukraine, which offers crucial lessons for policy and preparedness in the UK and beyond.
Bringing together UK and Ukrainian AMR experts, including Dr Olena Moshynets from Ukraine’s National Academy of Sciences, the report calls for stronger national protocols, investment in diagnostics and infection control, and greater international cooperation. Recommendations included embedding AMR in the National Security Strategy, which the Prime Minister has said will be launched in June ahead of the next NATO meeting, and investing in affordable diagnostic tools suited to conflict settings.
