National Measurement Laboratory host Science Open Day

By December 8, 2025No Comments

The National Measurement Laboratory (NML), as part of LGC’s National Laboratories, recently hosted the inaugural Science Open Day at their new purpose-built facilities in Guildford — a celebration of innovation, collaboration, and scientific excellence.

More than a tour of laboratories, the event offered guests the chance to meet the scientists at the heart of the National Laboratories’ work and to explore the exciting opportunities these new spaces make possible for the future.

Key themes from the day included work on:

  • Diagnostics and Advanced Therapeutics – From cancer genomics to cell-based therapies for diabetes and rare blood disorders, the National Laboratories are ensuring that precision in healthcare is built on trusted measurements.
  • Food Safety and Authenticity –  Expertise to ensure that foods are safe, authentic, and accurately labelled.
  • Sustainability and Public Health – Developing capabilities to detect microplastics and PFAS in food and environmental samples, the National Laboratories are helping protect ecosystems and public health.
  • Nanomedicines – Extending expertise in engineered particles into bioparticles to support the safe development of next-generation therapies.

Bringing collaborators and partners together at the Science Open Day — sharing ideas, expertise, and ambition — marked an important step in strengthening connections and ensuring the National Laboratories continue to deliver real-world impact. Collaboration is what makes progress possible, uniting government, academia, industry, healthcare, and international organisations. Together, we share knowledge, strengthen standards, and accelerate innovation.

The Science Open Day was also an opportunity to celebrate the work achieved with partners and collaborators, and to thank them for the trust and support they continue to give.
