The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency have announced Lawrence Tallon as their new Chief Executive from 1st April.
Mr Tallon has a broad background across the health sector, having held senior roles within the NHS and Civil Service. He is currently Deputy Chief Executive at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, where he has served since March 2020.
He is also managing director of the Shelford Group, which represents some of England’s leading NHS teaching hospitals. This experience has given him valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities facing modern healthcare systems.
Prior to this he served as Director of Strategy, Planning and Performance at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and worked within the Department of Health and Social Care alongside ministers and NHS leaders
With the agency looking to support the NHS ten year plan and Labour’s NHS reforms, the appointment of a leader with an operationally-focussed perspective is a strong hint that the MHRA are likely to be focussing heavily on delivery.
BIVDA meet regularly with the MHRA’s Executive Committee, and we look forwards to building a relationship with Mr Tallon. We also extend our best wishes to outgoing Chief Executive Dame June Raine for her retirement.
