Helen attends Labour Party Conference

BIVDA Chief Executive Helen Dent reports from the Labour Party Conference. The atmosphere was buzzing following the Prime Minister’s speech in the afternoon, the first for a Labour leader at conference since 2009.

Sir Keir’s message on growth was referenced throughout the day in speeches at other events, emphasising how the Government’s key priority has permeated all policy areas.

With BIVDA’s strategy 6 months in, it was important to hear the principal messages from conference, better understand the Government’s policy objectives, and network, supporting BIVDA’s ambitions to grow the UK’s medical diagnostics industry for the benefit of the health and wealth of our nation.

Growth, sustainability and diversity were the key themes throughout the event.

While the Government clearly has a commitment to sustainability and net zero, the focus appeared to be on clean energy. Sustainability in healthcare was notable by its absence, so this will be a key area for BIVDA to advocate for into 2025.

Members will be aware that there is work on the NHS requirement for Scope 3 underway currently, led by Beth Loudon with support from Neil, Mike, Sarah and Helen. If you have not replied to the survey, please do so here. This isn’t an issue that affects any one type of supplier; there are potential impacts and differing challenges no matter what size your company is.

On growth, there was a significant focus on the importance of SMEs. While encouraging other policy developments currently underway (such as the proposed MHRA fees increase) run the risk of stifling SMEs, impacting growth, affecting patient access to diagnostics as products are either not brought to market or even withdrawn.

BIVDA will continue to work with Government to ensure all members are supported to operate effectively and profitably in the UK, including our Springboard programme which supports new entrants to the market.

Helen was invited to evening receptions focusing on growth and diversity. She was able to discuss growth opportunities for BIVDA members with the Deputy Mayor of London for Business and Growth, Howard Dawber, and spoke with MPs on improving NHS supply chains to drive growth.

The diversity event included NHS England representatives and Labour MPs. David Burton-Samson MP and Bayo Alaba MP sought to celebrate and champion the merits of inclusivity. Kim Johnson MP also gave a short address, noting her pride at being the first Black woman MP in Liverpool.

BIVDA look forward to following up on the opportunities forged at conference and continuing to feed into the Government’s plans for economic growth and reforms in the NHS and public health.
