Contribute to academic research on single-use diagnostic waste

By August 19, 2025No Comments

Academic researchers are seeking contributions on the the research topic, “Towards an Eco-Friendly Future for Microfluidics, Lab-on-a-Chip and Point-of-Care Devices”, to be published in Frontiers in Lab on a Chip Technologies. It now has extended its submission deadline to 31 October 2025.

They are calling for engineers, economists, healthcare professionals, manufacturers, regulators and policy makers to join forces and work together to come up with solutions to reduce the amount of waste created by the microfluidic, lab-on-a-chip and point-of-care devices industry.

The collection is expected to feature between six and twelve manuscripts. Five submissions have already been secured, offering broad and in-depth perspectives from both industry and the third sector on the pressing issue of diagnostic waste and potential sustainable solutions.

This extension provides additional time to contribute, and further partial APC fee waivers will also be made available.

The editors are particularly interested in manuscripts that:

  • Quantify diagnostic waste, or showcase innovative sustainable materials and energy-efficient manufacturing methods

  • Present life cycle assessments of microfluidic systems or point-of-care devices

  • Offer insights into regulatory or procurement frameworks, including the integration of environmental sustainability into Target Product Profiles (TPPs)

  • Share industrial or third-sector perspectives that can stimulate cross-sector dialogue and action

Further details on the Research Topic can be found here, along with the editors’ Grand Challenge perspective.

This call represents an important opportunity for the community to shape a more sustainable future for microfluidics and diagnostic technologies.
