Value-based procurement pilots launched in thirteen NHS trusts

NHS England has launched pilots of a value-based procurement approach towards MedTech across thirteen trusts.

Trusts such as Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will take part, with rollout across the NHS expected by early 2026.

The NHS currently spends around £10 billion per year on MedTech, but has previously opted to buy tech based primarily on cost rather than effectiveness, and the government believe this will save billions of pounds.

New Health Minister Zubir Ahmed stated that the NHS must ‘invest to save’ by purchasing the most effective, not the cheapest, technology which accounts for benefits including improved patient outcomes, lower total costs across the patient pathway, and freeing up clinicians’ time.

BIVDA has strongly advocated for this shift, which should support the adoption of cutting-edge diagnostics and enable earlier, faster diagnoses for UK patients.
