In good news for British businesses, the Chief Executive of BritishAmerican Business, Duncan Edwards, believes the UK will not be hit will harmful tariffs once the former President, Donald Trump, takes charge for his second term.
During his campaign, Mr Trump repeatedly claimed that he would impose numerous tariffs, including a 60% tariff on certain Chinese goods and a universal 10% tariff on other countries. However, Mr Edwards stated categorically that the UK would not be subject to any tariffs, and even raised the possibility of the UK securing a long-desired free trade deal with the US.
Governor of New Jersey, Phil Murphy, agrees with Mr Edwards’ assessment, however, it should be noted that the Governor is a Democrat and therefore does not have personal insight into the Trump camp’s motives.
Avoiding tariffs and the prospect of a free trade deal would be extremely beneficial for diagnostics businesses who seek to export their products to the United States.
The UK and the US had numerous rounds of negotiations during the President-elect’s previous term between 2017 – 2021, with the acceptance of American food products proving the most contentious issue for British politicians and the media.
