£12 million funding awarded to advance innovative cancer projects

  • Twenty-three companies will benefit from a share of £12 million from the Innovate UK Cancer Therapeutics programme.
  • The investment from Innovate UK will drive both early and later stage innovations in cancer therapies, building on UK economic potential in this field.
  • Projects include Proteotype Diagnostics ‘ urine-based ‘multicancer early detection at home’ test using amino acid biomarkers already validated in plasma.

 

Catching up on sleep at weekends may lower heart disease risk by a fifth – study

  • People who “catch up” on missed sleep at the weekend may have up to a 20% lower risk of heart disease compared with those who do not, according to a study.
  • The findings, presented at a meeting of the European Society of Cardiology, looked at data from 90,903 adults taking part in the UK Biobank project, a database that holds medical and lifestyle records of 500,000 people in the UK.

 

UK-Ukraine digital trade set to grow

  • UK and Ukrainian businesses set to benefit as UK-Ukraine digital trade deal enters into force as of last week.
  • Agreement paves the way for a new era of trade, making trade between both countries cheaper and easier and boosting both economies.
  • Trading digitally is particularly important during the current conflict, where warfare and damage to infrastructure make it harder to trade physically.

 

Many patients leave GP appointment without discussing all worries, survey shows

  • Two-fifths of patients leave their GP appointment without discussing everything that is worrying them about their health, a survey has revealed.
  • The finding has prompted claims that older people often feel family doctors “want them out the door as soon as possible” rather than listening to all their concerns.
  • The polling firm Ipsos found that while 51% of Britons were able to talk about “everything” or “most things” they wanted to raise the last time they saw a GP, 40% were only able to discuss “some things”, “hardly anything” or “nothing at all”.
