Researchers restore antibiotic effect in the event of resistance

  • Bacterial resistance negates the effect of antibiotics in the treatment of infection.
  • Using mouse models, researchers now show that if antibiotics are administered with an enzyme called endolysin, the combined effect protects against infection by resistant bacteria in all bodily organs – including the brain, which antibiotics alone have difficulty reaching.
  • The results are reported in the journal Molecular Medicine.

Cheaper and more accurate test to diagnose milk allergy in children

  • A blood test showing how white blood cells interact with milk proteins could transform the diagnosis and management of cow’s milk allergy in young children.
  • The basophil activation test (BAT) is more accurate than standard allergy tests for detecting cow’s milk allergy in children and could reduce the need for oral food challenges in allergy diagnosis.
  • The study, which was funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC), was led by researchers from: King’s College London and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

AI designs antibiotics for gonorrhoea and MRSA superbugs

  • Artificial intelligence has invented two new potential antibiotics that could kill drug-resistant gonorrhoea and MRSA, researchers have revealed.
  • The drugs were designed atom-by-atom by the AI and killed the superbugs in laboratory and animal tests.
  • The two compounds still need years of refinement and clinical trials before they could be prescribed.

Cancer patients missing treatment due to tumour testing delays (paywall)

  • Long turnaround times for lab results mean doctors are unable to determine the best treatment options.
