The Lib Dems held their annual conference in Brighton last week and fresh from a record election result, pledged to hold the Government to account on the health service.
This was led by Lib Dem Leader Ed Davey, who called his party the ‘biggest champions of our NHS’. On reforming the health service, his rhetoric was similar to the Government’s, suggesting that there needed to be a greater focus on community care and wise investments in health, which could unlock economic growth for the UK and provide greater happiness and wellbeing for the population.
Echoing his message from the general election campaign, Mr Davey stated that the NHS could not be fixed without addressing problems with care, which he claimed Labour have failed to adequately recognise.
Deputy Leader of the Lib Dems Daisy Cooper gave an emotional speech, detailing how she only had days to live without major surgery 12 years ago. She questioned whether patients today would experience the same level of quality care as then and called for the Government to increase NHS funding to aid the health service.
Also announced at the conference were the Lib Dems spokespeople in all areas. Those pertinent to BIVDA are listed below:
- Helen Morgan MP – Health and Social Care
- Jess Brown Fuller MP – Hospitals and Primary Care
- Victoria Collins MP – Science, Innovation and Technology
- Sarah Gibson MP – Business
