Fresh funding for Exeter research hub creating new microscopic medical sensors

By May 27, 2025No Comments

Researchers at the University of Exeter will lead a cutting-edge facility, the MetaHub, dedicated to developing advanced materials engineered at the nanoscale. These metamaterials, which are designed at the molecular level to exhibit properties not found in nature, could revolutionise technologies like medical sensors and next-generation computer components.

Backed by £19.6 million in combined public and private funding, announced by Science Minister Lord Vallance, the initiative positions the UK at the forefront of a rapidly growing field. Of the total funding, £10.5 million comes from UK Research and Innovation, £4.5 million from private investors, and £4.65 million from the University of Exeter and partner institutions.

As the UK builds on its leadership in metamaterials, this investment is expected to drive innovation, attract industry, and generate new jobs and businesses nationwide.
