On Sunday, Dr Adam Rutherford made the Radio 4 Appeal on behalf of AMR Action UK.
In the 3-minute segment, Dr Rutherford recounted how, like many of his generation, antibiotics has saved his life multiple times. However, due to the rise of antimicrobial resistance, antibiotic efficacy is gravely under threat.
Dr Rutherford stressed that AMR is not a distant concern, it is present and dangerous today. He noted the recent example of a young mother who developed sepsis after her common urinary tract infection was found to be resistant to antibiotics.
AMR is a key priority for BIVDA, with diagnostics a key tool in reducing unnecessary prescribing and enabling targeted treatment. High-profile opportunities to spread awareness about AMR are extremely important and we welcome Dr Rutherford and AMR Action UK’s intervention.
