UK REACH authorisation decision
The Secretary of State for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), with the consent of Scottish and Welsh Ministers, has made a decision on an application for authorisation for the time-limited use of an substances of very high concern (SVHC) under UK REACH.
The Defra Secretary of State has granted an authorisation to:
- ENTEK International Limited for the use of trichloroethylene (TCE) as an extraction solvent for removal of process oil and formation of the porous structure in polyethylene-based separators used in lead-acid batteries.
Applications for authorisation received by the HSE, and the opinions on these, are included in the HSE database of applications granted and in progress.

- Government response to consultation on potential amendments to the Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Regulation
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has published the UK government response to the consultation on potential amendments to the Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Regulation which was held from 2 March to 27 April 2023:
- the consultation outcome is now available
- there is also a summary of all responses received. This highlights the UK government’s intention to move forward with a number of proposed changes to the POPs Regulation.
