In its February meeting, our Biocidal Products Committee (BPC) adopted six opinions on active substances and two on Union authorisations. The committee supported, for example, the approval of ethanol for use in hand and general disinfectants.
Listen also to our Safer Chemicals Podcast with the BPC Chair Joost van Galen to learn what lead to the Committee’s ethanol opinion, what it means and what happens next.
Our Risk Assessment Committee has concluded its evaluation of the universal restriction proposal on all per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Its opinion is the first part of our two-committee scientific evaluation of the proposal.
We have updated our annual statistics on evaluation progress.
Between 2009 and 2025, we checked the compliance of more than 30 % of the substances registered before 2019 at volumes of at least 100 tonnes per year. Overall, we have checked the compliance of 16 100 registrations, representing 23,5 % of all submitted dossiers and covering 2 380 substances.
Member States will finalise the 2025 substance evaluation for eight substances on 25 March 2026.
We will send the finalised draft decisions to registrants as they arrive, and wherever possible, within two weeks of receiving them from the evaluating Member States. Registrants will then have 30 days to submit their comments.
The draft decisions address the following substances, for which further information is needed to clarify identified concerns:
Triethyl phosphate (EC 201-114-5, CAS 78-40-0), evaluated by France.
Tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (EC 201-116-6, CAS 78-42-2), evaluated by France.
Acrylic acid, monoester with propane-1,2-diol (EC 247-118-0, CAS 25584-83-2), evaluated by France.
Oligomerisation products of alpha-pinene and beta-pinene (EC 701-463-8), evaluated by Spain.
Substance evaluation does not require further information for:
Potassium dicyanoargentate (EC 208-047-0, CAS 506-61-6), evaluated by the Netherlands.
[3-(2,3-epoxypropoxy)propyl]diethoxymethylsilane (EC 220-780-8, CAS 2897-60-1), evaluated by Italy.
[3-(2,3-epoxypropoxy)propyl]dimethoxymethylsilane (EC 265-929-8, CAS 65799-47-5), evaluated by Italy.
Oligomerisation products of beta-pinene (EC 701-246-8) evaluated by Spain.
