BSI and Danish Standard have agreed to launch the work of a joint quick guide on relevant standards available to the MedTech industry in their efforts to transitioning to a circular healthcare product ecosystem.
The agreement follows successful workshops in London and Copenhagen aiming at evaluating how well healthcare product manufacturers and other stakeholders in the two markets are aware of, understand and use existing sustainability and circular economy standards.
The workshops revealed that MedTech companies face significant challenges in implementing sustainability standards, primarily due to regulatory uncertainty, infrastructure limitations, lack of data and inconsistent data requirements. At the same time many participants in both workshops were unaware of relevant standards that could support circularity and net-zero goals.
The workshop in Copenhagen took place Friday this week as part of a strategic network set up by Danish Standards last year to support the life science industry in its transitioning to a circular healthcare product ecosystem.
Thank you to Lena Cordie-Bancroft and Nele Zgavc from BSI for kicking-off the workshop based on their experience, and to Nicklas Christian Funk from Ambu A/S for managing the workshop. Also thank you to Trine Lund Neidel from Novo Nordisk for providing an update on the progress made by Novo Nordisk and a group of international pharmaceutical companies in developing a LCA standard on the environmental footprint of pharmaceuticals and related medical devices.
