NIHR launches global programme to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR)

By April 24, 2026No Comments

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) has announced a new global health funding opportunity to combat AMR. The initiative, funded by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), will allow researchers to apply for between £500,000 and £5 million to transform their promising research into solutions which can be embedded into daily clinical practice.

The programme aims not just to reduce the impact of AMR worldwide, but also to bolster health systems and improve the health outcomes of vulnerable populations.

Funding allocation will be focused on later-stage research to shorten the gap between innovation and impact, with projects in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia given priority. Both regions are currently most significantly affected by AMR and possess health systems under considerable strain. NIHR notes that, given AMR is a global threat that transcends borders, the findings will ultimately be of great benefit to UK patients.

Research offering quickly implementable results while also being inclusive and community-informed is considered of greatest value to NIHR, and will help to prevent infections and improve diagnosis and access to effective treatments.

The deadline for applications is 8th July 2026 and the funding page can be found here.
