UK Defence Innovation seeks innovations for blood testing in the field

By March 17, 2026No Comments

UK Defence Innovation (UKDI) have launched a competition seeking innovative ideas to test blood for infection and blood type, to be deployed in defence settings.

Personnel injured in conflict rely on the timely provision of blood as a matter of life or death. The availability of logistically light, accurate tests able to be used in the deployed environment would enable emergency blood testing in the field, thus maximising available stock on operations.

Funding of up to £3 million (excluding VAT) is available. UKDI expects to fund 4 to 6 proposals, in the region of £500,000 to £700,000 each.

The deadline to submit a proposal is midday 2 June 2026.

A webinar will be held on 19 March 10:30am to 12pm to provide further information. You can register here.

BIVDA member Aquarius Health, who have successfully partnered on numerous research grants, have offered to assist any members interested in submitting an application. If you would like to learn more through an exploratory call, please email elisabeth.adams@aquariusph.com.
