Health Service Journal recognises the need for reform in Pathology Managed Services Procurement

By July 16, 2025No Comments

On Friday, HSJ published an article which highlighted the challenges with procurement in Managed Services for Pathology and signposted to the Call for Evidence that has been launched with DHSC.

The article headlines with the extent of legal challenge in pathology procurements and goes on to lay out the impact this has on costs of the service and ultimately the quality of services to patients. HSJ highlighted that BIVDA had raised the issues with DHSC and that DHSC had responded with the call for evidence as a result.

BIVDA are hugely encouraged that this critical issue is justifiably getting the profile and coverage that it deserves. Reform in the way Pathology Managed Services are contracted for is well overdue and will directly impact on the quality of diagnostic services that NHS patients receive.

We are also really pleased that the article points clearly to the fact that DHSC have listened and responded to concerns raised by our industry which we believe paves the way for a truly collaborative approach in the future.

Members are reminded of the importance of responding to this call for evidence by 5th September. Beth.loudon@bivda.org.uk can support Members who have any queries on the Call for Evidence and there will a further briefing session on 13th August.
